Shashi Tharoor, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, was recently asked to move out of his plush accomodations at a five-star hotel in Delhi given the government’s drought-driven austerity drive. After complying, an embarrassed Tharoor twittered defensively that he was spending his own savings. In another tweet, Tharoor referred to the economy class in planes as “cattle class” leading even the Congress party to denounce him.
Isn’t this the same “cattle class” that Tharoor was running around a few months back to get elected? He had even modified his sartorial tastes spending most time in a dhoti. But empathy is not necessarily something you can learn at St. Stephens or the U.N. assuming those institutions help develop any skills.
